1. When and why did you get into fashion?

My interest began when I was 14 when my mom taught me how to sew a simple zip pouch. It opened my eyes to the endless possibilities a sewing machine could bring. I wanted to study fashion after but didn’t know how serious a career I could make it into be so I went to complete JC and a degree in business at NUS. After that, I decided i couldn’t wait anymore so I went to do another degree in fashion design in Hong Kong before returning to Singapore to work for a few local companies.

2. What do you do at MM?

I design and produce collections with the team, create the prints you see in each collection and… everything else.

3. What would you be doing if you weren’t doing this?

Probably working in an art gallery because I love art history too!

4. What are your habits that the team always observe you doing?

I’m a habitual nail biter kind of person. It’s a reflex when I get nervous and I really have to stop!

5. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?

Peru for sure. I’ve always wanted to visit Macchu Pichu and they have an amazing culture and the colours!!! Then off to Bolivia to see the salt plains and then to Patagonia.

ALICIA THNG

Senior Fashion Designer

1. When and why did you get into fashion?

Once I’ve ended my Olevels and determined to study anything that DOES NOT require examinations. So while planning where to go with my O’level scores, I realised I always have issues looking for suitable clothes and having the habit of altering clothes (changing the sleeves, adding some trimmings etc) That’s how I have decided to learn further about fashion so I can design something that I like.

2. What would you be doing if you weren’t doing this?

Probably architecture.

3. What do you do in your free time?

Shop and shop and shop. Also, museum or gallery hopping!

4. What are your habits that your team always observe you doing?

Always complaining hungry? Not too sure, you can ask them ;)

5. If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Halter Top with Harem Pants. And not forgetting boots!!

6. Who is/are your style icon/s?

Amata Chittasenee aka PEARYPIE. I can never hate any of her outfits. It is always so well curated!!

7. What snack can you just not get enough of?

Truffle Chips from Aroma Truffle

8. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?

Iceland. It looks super awesome!! Also, my first priority for a trip would be sightseeing.

NURIN JAZLINA

Fashion Design Intern

1. When and why did you get into fashion?

I officially got into fashion in 2017 when I chose to pursue it in my studies. It's cliche but I got into fashion because growing up, my mother does not believe in ready-made traditional outfits for my Hari Raya. When I was younger, she used to design for my siblings and me our Hari Raya outfits. She’d even source out the fabrics and then sew all 4 outfits herself, including hers. Now, as I grew older, we found our personal seamstress and knowing how to design my own outfits, she leaves it all to me to design for the family. I chose to pursue fashion because I wanted to learn in detail the technicalities of one garment and how it's constructed etc. Other than that, it was just because I do not like studying by the book and fashion is fun.

2. What would you be doing if you weren’t doing this?

Ahhh something boring and something that I'd constantly fail. It was either Interior Architecture & Design or Early Childhood Development & Education.

3. What do you do in your free time?

Binge-watch any kind of shows I could find, adding items into wishlist (not cart) through different online shopping platforms and on paydays I’d go Halal ethnic food hunting with my boyfriend.

4. How was your experience interning for MM?

My experience with MM has been nothing but joyful. It's like my personal safe space to get creative without any judgments. I've benefitted a lot from being an intern here and the fact that both Dawn and Alicia trust me with most of the work makes me feel that I could actually make it in the fashion industry haha. MM has given me a lot of exposure to the real working industry of fashion. Towards the end of the internship, I realized I've gained two new friends that I can rely on and care about despite the age gap. Overall, my experience with MM was awesome!

5. What do you find yourself wearing when you’re feeling your best?

Anything of colour/prints. Which means not black or white

6. Who is/are your style icon/s?

I am my own style icon... If not, they are @mariaalia, @sashfir, @sauf.etc

7. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go and why?

Turkey! Specifically Istanbul. It's one of the most beautiful cities in the world in my opinion with really amazing architecture. Would love to visit their beautiful mosques!
